Are you one of the millions of Americans that are going to decorate their homes for the Christmas holiday? Maybe this will be the first you have decorated your home or maybe you are adding to your collection. If you plan on putting any decorations up on your roof, Skyline Designs Roofing & Restoration has some safety tips that we hope you will follow to keep you and your home safe during this busy holiday season.

What Should I Look for when Inspecting a Roof?

Before you begin hauling decorations up to the roof we recommend that you have a professional roof inspection done. Here at Skyline Designs Roofing & Restoration we have a comprehensive roof inspection list that is very meticulous. We will cover every square inch of your rooftop so that we can see if there is anything that you need to address. After the inspection is complete you can rest assured that you are getting up on a nice and safe roof to put up your Christmas decorations.

Are Christmas Decorations a Fire Hazard

Another thing you will want to do before crawling up onto the roof is inspect lights and extension cords. If you have any frayed wiring you could find yourself with a house fire. If you find frayed wiring you will want to throw the item away. The cost of replacing your lights or extensions cords will be far less than the costs associated with a house fire.

Is it Safe to Hang Lights from Roof?

You should always have someone working with you if you are going to be up on the roof. One person stands on the ground to act as a spotter. The spotter helps hold the ladder while you are climbing up to the roof and then watches for potential hazards that the person on the roof may not be able to see from their viewpoint. Making sure that you are using an appropriate ladder is an easy way to avoid injury. You ladder should be sturdy and secure. You will want it to be three feet taller than the entry point for maximum safety. Always make sure that someone is holding the ladder as you are on it for added safety. As you are hanging lights and plugging decorations in you will want to make sure that you are protecting your plugs. We recommend that you wrap your plugs with electrical tape as you are plugging décor together. This will help keep the water out of your plugs. If some areas of your roof are likely to have water build up you will want to make sure that you do not place cords or lights in those areas. Adjust your decorating to avoid these areas.
