As we sit firmly in spring and summer is just around the corner, this is the bet time of year to tackle the outdoor projects. Roof maintenance is an important part of your “to do” list. There are several things you can do to help protect your roof’s health, longevity, and curb appeal. Today, we at Skyline Designs Roofing & Restoration would like to list the important spring/summer maintenance you should routinely do to help you keep the roof in better condition.

Spring Maintenance to Prolong the Life of My Roof

1) Cleaning the gutters and downspouts. The gutters, downspouts, and surrounding areas should be cleaned as one of the first projects. Make sure all of the debris is completely removed from gutters and downspouts. If not taken care of properly, the gutters and downspouts blocked with damp leaves and twigs in the canal can lead to damage to your roof and siding. Clean out the gutters for best results by a professional contractor can help you safely and correctly get it done.
2) Inspect the roofing shingles. After you have removed and cleaned the debris in the gutters, downspouts, and surrounding areas, inspecting the shingles is the next step. Should any of the shingles be curling, loose, broken, or cracked, they will need to be replaced. Before any shingles fly away, if you noticed that any nails are missing or sticking up, have the nails replaced and tightly secured down.
3) Check for signs of water damage on roof. Looking for water damage, or signs of it, is ideal, especially after the roof has dried after a rainstorm. Soft spot, and cracks on the roof should be looked for. Taking action right away can prevent further problems from occurring, such as rot or even mold developments, in the event you notice any leaks or see signs of water damage. Hire a professional to do the repairs so you know all damage is taken care of, if you have seen your even suspect water damage.
4) Hire a licensed professional for a roof inspection service. A roof inspection is essential, and they should be conducted every 6-12 months. Even after your inspection you do not find cause of alarm, having a professional perform a thorough inspection can often find things you have overlooked. They will go over every aspect of the roof to ensure there are no significant issues. Should any be found, they will provide written documentation and their recommended solutions for any problems. Repairing minor issues as the begin to develop can prevent serious problems down the road. Any rot, mild growth, or other more serious problems can lead to extreme damage and costly repairs if not taken care of quickly.
